According to aboriginal lore, two young lovers, Boodi and Yalima fled their tribe in order to escape Yalima's arranged marriage to an elder she would be expected to take care of. It was believed to be the time before fish when people survived off of the land. The couple eventually came to the place where the river's met the ocean. They realized the only way they could be together would be to live in the waters. It is said they took the shape of the Barramundi, forbidden lovers hiding underneath the mangroves. True believers know the fish to be an aphrodisiac. Thus you will find it referred to in tales as "the Passion Fish".
